It Didn’t Have to Be This Way

It didn’t have to be this way
She said with a silent tear.
It didn’t have to be this way,
Now the pain has turned to fear.

All she wanted was peace and love
A thing people take for granted.
Not for her, for love she knew
Was something to be cherished.

I don’t care what you remember
That our opinions are not the same.
I don’t care what you believe in
Or that our religions are not friends.

I don’t care how dark the skin
Or pale you are either,
I only care to not give in
To the anger life provides us.

I don’t care who you love,
Better to love than to hate.
There’s enough negative in the world,
Who am I to say what’s right?

All I know, and it’s proven
Each and every day,
Nothing ever really had
To end up this way.

I don’t believe the real problem is
The differences we have.
Maybe the trouble lies,
In just how alike we are.

I wonder if evil-people from past,
Like Hitler, Stalin, and every last one,
Are smiling now at our anger inside
And hope that’s long forgotten?

It didn’t have to be this way
The country-no world in anger.
The only way to stop it now,
Is to love all, one another.

No more fighting, no more tempers,
No more acting like were two,
Were hand-in-hand together now,
Were humans, every one of you!
