My last challenge was to get dancing back in my life. It took me some time to figure things out, however it is officially done! Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I will be dancing. It’s been super fun to get back into the groove of dancing again! Having the freedom to create yourself is truly fun!
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” The older I get, the more this seems to be true. As we grow from childhood to adolescence we seem to go towards things we are familiar with. Stepping into the unfamiliar can be scary, and the older we get the harder it seems to be for some people. For me however, I love stepping into the unknown. I love the thrill of something new, a new place, a new adventure, a new movie, and best of all, new friends. My fault lies in getting caught up and tangled in another’s life and forgetting my individuality that somehow became lost along the way.
However, now I have true freedom. Someone told me recently that “Freedom is in knowing who you are.” I have no idea where that person got that line, but it is a powerful message. I had to think about it at first because freedom can be taken to many different levels. For example, there is oppression, freedom for slaves, freedom of religions, or family, or even freedom out of a relationship. There is so much meaning in that one word-“freedom”- that I had to stop and really think about it. However, I think I understand better now. If you truly know yourself, who you are, what you stand for, what you love, and what you believe in, then you know what to do with your life. You know who can fit into your life and who can’t. If you know yourself that well, then its ok if someone doesn’t accept you, or rejects you because you accept yourself for who you are: no one can take that away from you. That is true freedom.
Virginia Woolf seemed to understand it when she stated, “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” It’s very true. If you know who you are in your heart and mind, no one should be able to take that from you.
This spring, I have big plans to explore and travel. I am curious what my next challenge should be. Any suggestions?
