Can One Person Change the World?

Intriguing question, isn’t it? Can one person change the world? I’m not talking about some mythic or God-like being or fiction character, I mean one, an everyday person such as you or me, make a significant difference in this massive, ever-changing world we live in? I have thought long and hard about this question lately.

In my experience, I have met more people with a strong desire to be a good person and do good, than I have met people with evil intentions in the world. Of course, I’m sure most people don’t advertise the dark corners of their thoughts or heart, but it does seem to me, on some kind of basic level, people have a desire to do good. Smiling at strangers who seem sad, wanting to spend time and be with loved ones, or just letting someone else go first in line because you can tell they are in a hurry or having a rough day. It’s the little things I have learned in life that make the most difference. Simple truths that are said can cause mighty ripples in the ocean of lies and craziness in our world.

If we look back on people who have made the world a better place, honestly, I feel it’s hard to pick just one to mention here. But if you think about them all, what did they all have in common? Were they angry? Violent? Mean? Negative? Did they act sorry for themselves when times got tough or they felt lonely? No. They spoke the words of their hearts. I think it was Shakespeare who said: “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Maybe that’s why it’s always harder to hear words of love from others, than words of hate. Truth, love, these all sound corny, sure, because that’s the way Hollywood and society has made it sound. Yet, I can’t help but believe that those two little words are the best weapons to use in going through life.

Today is Valentine’s Day, as I am sure you all know. I have heard many people say how its “Singles Awareness Day” or other negative aspects of it. Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but my thoughts are, Valentine’s day is love. Why does that have to be confined to only love in a relationship? Why not the love you have for your life, your family, your friends, your blessings, and so forth? Looking through a telescope will limit your vision around you avoiding the big beautiful picture of life.

What is my point on this random tangent? That would be if we all have good in our hearts, and we all want to make a real difference, then why not start with Valentines Day, and show your love and appreciation to all around you. Start spreading positive words of encouragement, and not remind and focus on what you feel are the negative things in life. I know this is easier said than done, but don’t you think it’s worth a shot?

I can honestly say I have so much in life to be thankful for, and I know there are thousands of others who don’t even have a home to sleep tonight or food to eat tonight. So, I want to start by being thankful for what I do have and love, and the people I get to share my day and life with. I hope to make a positive impact, reminding others to look at the light in their hearts, not the shadows. Because the light is where we can help others shine in their darkest moments. And if we all come together, maybe we can bring new light and joy with positive attitudes into the world, and drive out the dark shadows once and for all. I know I may seem a little too ambitious, but I just wish and dream of a happier and brighter world. Don’t you? So, this is where I choose to start. I want to thank you all for reading my blog. I love sharing my thoughts with the world in the hopes of helping others find the good and love inside them to share with the world too. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Funny, Bruce and I were talking about something similar this morning. We were discussing how we influence each other and bring light or darkness into our/their lives by having a positive or negative attitude. I liked this one very much.

Well said, Laura, I agree that there are more good people than inherently evil. And that love is more powerful than hate or fear. In 1st Timothy (or maybe it’s 2nd Timothy) we learn that “God did not give us the spirit of fear but of love, and of power, and of a sound mind.”

Thanks! I wish more people are good as well. I think we all have more in common with each other than we think sometimes. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
