Forging Life and Who We Want to Be

Someone asked me recently why the worst kept happening to her over and over again the last few years. Listening to her story as she turned to me for answers I found myself not knowing what to say that can help her. For some reason, the first thing that came to my mind was an image: a blacksmith working at his forge. I told my dear friend that life throws us all into the fires. Pound after pound like the blacksmith’s hammer, life is forming us into who we are and who we will become. We get moments of fresh water and calm in the midst of our lives, but if life was always easy then how could we become strong, brave, smart, or even experienced? I began wondering what the trials she endured have taught her. One reply was how precious life was. The love for her family has grown, as with the size of her family. When you shift your perspective on what good is coming out of all wrongs around you, you may be amazed at the wonderful things you are surrounded by at every corner of your life.

Unfortunately, too often we can’t see the good from the bad around us. Nevertheless, one thing I was reminded of the last few weeks was when you start the spiral of negative thinking, the only thing that grows from it is negative feelings of despair and negative results. It’s extremely tough to be positive when life is beating you down. This is something I believe we have all experienced at least once in our lives. However, learning to stand again and choosing to see the good around you is the first step in being cleared of the hard times that have been getting you down. If you focus on the bad and the stressful things, then that will be all you can see. The good news is, if you start to think about the good, then you will begin to see the good around you. If you are in your life and all you see is negative, then I suggest trying to shift your perspective. How is the weather? Has a friend been with you to help you? Are you still getting through day-by-day? If you try to look around you, even if it’s a small, simple thing like an outfit that makes you smile, keep looking for the positive and the negative will start to fade.

My last two weeks have taught me a great deal. I always find myself amazed at how one day can change the course of your future. It only takes one day or one moment for your entire life to change, yet it’s not only the change that affects us, it’s how we deal with the change, what we learn from it, and how we overcome it that impacts our lives. It all comes back to the basic question: who do we want to be? Will life make us stronger, a voice or work of love, kindness, strength, or good? Or will we let life break us down into anger or rage hurting others around us or bringing others down? It took a sharp reminder for me to remember we are in control of who we want to be if we only have the courage to stand up and not give in to the negative the world throws at us each day. If we look out for one another, help each other, not fight or give in to the cynical world around us, then perhaps we can overcome the fires of hate and become better and stronger people from it.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If you’re going to give up after few attempts, bear it in mind that your struggles are going to be wasted.” I love this quote because it reminds me that struggles won’t stop. It’s part of life, and the unexpected happens to us all each day. But, if one day we decide we want to give up or give in to the pit of negativity, then everything we have been through would have been for nothing. It gives me hope and excitement that everything I have been through is why I am still standing today. Dark times loom on us all, but it’s the light of tomorrow that helps us through them. I know life can get us down, and after that day of change, we can be left feeling like a shadow of our previous selves. But each day if we work at it to see the good around us and apply in the things that make us happy, then pieces of our soul and happiness will start to fall in to place. That has been my experience on many occasions, and I believe all of us have the power to push through the hard times and stand tall again after walking through them if you only dare to be who you want to be.

People often think I’m crazy for believing there is more good in the world than we see. With so much sorrow all around us, it’s easy to forget the little things that make the most significant difference. So, I challenge everyone to stop and write down ten positive things they see today. Anything that makes you happy or smile, no matter what sorrows you are enduring or challenges you are trying to rise above. No answer is too small. It could be a smile from a stranger, a beautiful blue sky, or anything that brings warmth to your heart or a smile on your face. I hope that this challenge will help us all remember to focus on the good things too, to help make life a little better and brighter each day for everyone.
